More than 100 San Diego school district administrators and principals will be reassigned to different campuses and positions over the summer break. Its part of Superintendent Terry Grier's reorganization plan. But as KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis reports, some parents and teachers don't like the changes.
Many San Diego teachers and students will find a new leader at their school in September. He or she could be a principal from another school, a former top-ranking school official or a vice principal.
Sam Wong is overseeing the superintendent's administration shuffle. He says at the same time, many skilled principals will find themselves in the central office.
Wong: So each of those principals would create openings. And so we either have appointments or we have different ways to fill those. So this is creating a lot of movement.
Grier's plan dismantles former superintendent Carl Cohn's administrative team. But parents and teachers are upset, saying they're losing principals who know the unique needs of their schools and their. In fact, Grier had to back away from a few reassignments because his office was bombarded by complaints.
Grier: We made some decisions a few weeks ago, that we really should have slowed down a little and looked at the broader picture. But we're in a good position now.
That pleased hundreds of Spanish-speaking parents at Sherman Elementary -- a school that will debut a special bilingual program next school year. Parents there say Sherman's current principal Eddie Caballero is key to the program's success.
District officials say all this reorganizing comes at the same time when hundreds of teachers and employees are also being shuffled as a result of anticipated layoffs.
