Border Patrol Agent Shoots Man Who Allegedly Threw Rocks

A Border Patrol agent in San Diego has shot and wounded a Mexican man near the border in San Ysidro. The shooting comes amid what officials say is a spike in violence against Border Patrol agents. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has details.

U.S. law enforcement authorities say a group suspected of smuggling people into the country threw rocks at Border Patrol agents Tuesday evening.

Jason Rodgers is with the Border Patrol.

He says agents working near the outlet mall in San Ysidro came under attack.

Jason Rodgers: Softball sized to a little larger than brick sized rocks being thrown at them. The agents did fear for their lives. And an agent did use his weapon.

Mexican officials say the 22 year old man who was shot lives in Tijuana, in the neighborhood across the fence from the outlet mall. They says he's in stable condition.

Border Patrol officials say San Diego agents have been attacked more than 320 times in the last 10 months. There were 254 attacks all las year.

Officials say there've been eight officer involved shootings along San Diego's border so far this year. They don't know how many people have been injured or killed in those shootings.
