Political Fix by Gloria Penner

An Impromptu Kucinich Interview

Political Fix by Gloria Penner

KPBS Web Developer and Producer Joe Spurr and I were sitting at our table on Radio Row at the DNC last night, working on our separate projects when a very dapper Dennis Kucinich walked past.

I was deeply engrossed in some writing, but Joe challenged me to interview the former contender for the Democratic nomination.  His campaign in the Democratic primary had failed, but apparently his spirit wasn't diminished. He looked triumphant, almost as though this convention would come to its senses and give him the nomination.  His very attractive wife was busily smoothing his hair and straightening his tie and collar.

I couldn't resist Joe's challenge so we grabbed an audio kit and a microphone, walked half the length of our table and there I was conducting this extremely impromptu interview.  He responded enthusiastically and gave us a clear and thoughtful discussion of his views on the economy and foreign policy.  I wonder if he'll run again.

Wow!  There goes Senator Biden -- maybe another unplanned interview is waiting.

What an incredible opportunity! In my opinion, Kucinich has more understanding of the challenges of this country than any other ten politicians combined. Anyone familiar with what he contributed. Why hasn't the press picked up more on this info from Wikipedia? "He has criticized Diebold Election Systems (now Premier Election Solutions) for promoting voting machines that fail to leave a traceable paper trail, and posted on his website internal company memos in which company executives promised to deliver the 2004 Ohio election to Bush.[25] He was one of the thirty-one who voted in the House to not count the electoral votes from Ohio in the United States presidential election, 2004.[26]" ("Final Vote Results for Role Call 7", January 6, 2005) Thanks for jumping on the interview opportunity, Gloria! Dennis Kucinich was in favor of the United States not going to war with Iraq. For this, he deserves a great deal of credit. He also introduced to the House the Articles of Impeachment against George W. Bush and Richard Cheney. For this, he also deserves our thanks. Tonight, during the Democratic National Convention, I received the approximately tenth call from the Democratic Congressional Delegation requesting money for the congressional races. For the tenth time (approximately) I told them that until the Democrats in Congress cut off funding for the war in Iraq, I will not contribute any money to the Democratic House or Senate. As a member of MoveOn.org, I worked very hard making approximately 1000 calls to MoveOn.org members and Democratic or Independent voters in many states and, it was because of our efforts that the Democratic Party was able to take control of Congress in January of 2007. Since then, they have continued to fund the war fully and took impeachment off the table. This was a complete violation of the compact we had with the Democratic Party to get out of Iraq and to pursue impeachment of both Bush and Cheney. I see that Dennis Kucinich is not running for re-election to Congress. What are his reasons for not running again?
