Gay Parade Case Ends In Mistrial

A case that pitted four San Diego County firefighters against the City of San Diego has ended in a mistrial. The men say they were sexually harassed after being forced to participate in a gay pride parade last year. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

The jury deliberated nearly four days before announcing the deadlock.

The four men were ordered to ride in San Diego's gay pride parade last year after another crew canceled on short notice.

The firefighters who sued say they were humiliated by taunts and sexual gestures from parade watchers -- and then retaliated against when they brought the issue to light.

Attorneys representing the city say the parade is a city-sanctioned event -- however the fire department has changed its policy to make participation in any parade voluntary.

The men were suing for an unspecified amount of money. Their attorneys call the deadlock "extremely frustrating." They plan on seeking a new trial.
