Tom Fudge: Getting by, financially, in San Diego, is made especially difficult due to the high cost of housing. Something that contributes to that burden are the expectations people have that they, too, deserve a shot at the American dream. Here's a 34e from one San Diegan, named Thomas Courtney, who tells us why he always thought that owning a house was something he was bound to do.
"My dad does title examining my mother was a typist but they owned a house and when I became a teacher and I married an archaeologist I thought gosh, we're really going to own a house."
Thomas and his wife Shelley did buy a house in 2004, but it was up on Palomar Mountain, an hour and a half commute from their work in San Diego. Their story of trying to afford a home and the hardships it lead to, both financially and personally, is the central story in a new documentary tonight on KPBS TV. The documentary is one of a several-part series we've been bringing you called Getting By , an Envision San Diego special broadcast.
The Envision San Diego TV special Getting By will air tonight at 8pm on KPBS TV. Cable channel 11, broadcast channel 15.
