Tom Fudge: Bayfront property in downtown San Diego is very valuable. It might be the most choice land in all of the county, and a group of developers wants to create an additional 97 acres of property by putting a deck on the 10th Avenue Marine Terminal. They've taken the first step in that direction by qualifying Proposition B for the November ballot.
Proposition B is described, on the ballot, as a measure to adopt the "Port of San Diego Marine Freight Preservation and Bayfront Redevelopment Initiative". But this is not an initiative proposed by the port. In fact, Port District officials are very opposed to it. And some argue it will not preserve marine freight activity. Quite the opposite, they say. Again, Prop. B calls for the construction of a deck, on top of the marine terminal, on which 97 acres of new real estate could be developed.
