The Christmas season is coming to an end and decorations are coming down. But San Diego officials are hoping residents will refrain from throwing the trees out with the trash. KPBS reporter Katie Orr has details.

The city is offering free Christmas tree recycling to all residents through January 23 rd . The Environmental Services Department is sponsoring the program in an effort to reduce the number of trees put into the Miramar Landfill. There are 16 drop-off locations throughout the city, including spots in Logan Heights, Scripps Ranch and Mission Bay. Trees must be free of any decorations, though those with fake snow will be accepted. The recycled trees will be turned into mulch or compost. City residents with curbside yard waste recycling can also leave trees to be taken during regular pick-up.
