Chicano Cultural Center to Undergo Restoration

A distinctive museum in Balboa Park will soon be getting a makeover. KPBS reporter Katie Orr has details.

The Centro Cultural de la Raza is covered in bright murals depicting Chicano culture. The paintings were done in the 1970s’ and over time they’ve faded and peeled. The Center’s Executive Director, Stephanie De La Torre says one of the original muralists applied for a grant to restore the buildings façade and was successful. She says the timing works well.

De La Torre:  The Centro will turn 40 years old next year. The centennial of the Park is coming up and we’re part of, you know, preserving Chicano history in a major, you know, San Diego’s gem basically, Balboa Park, and we’re part of that.

De La Torre says a conservator recently inspected the condition of the murals. He’ll make a recommendation at the end of the month on how to proceed with the restoration process.
