Gang violence continues to be a problem in San Diego and around California. Leaders from cities across the state will meet in Santa Rosa today and Friday to talk about what works when it comes to keeping kids out of gangs. KPBS reporter Katie Orr has details.
San Diego’s delegation will join groups from 12 other California cities for the meeting. Lynn Sharpe-Underwood is Executive Director of San Diego’s Commission on Gang Prevention and Intervention. She says she’s excited to share information with other cities.
Underwood: Santa Rosa, San Jose have been models for attacking this problem and coming up with solutions that work really well for their communities. So we’re all looking at what they’re doing and following the outcome and results of that.
Underwood says San Diego’s situation is unique. She says the military, a diverse population and being close to the border make gang trends here slightly different from other cities.
