Chapter Synopsis
The bus stops in Huila, Sonora for the bus driver to take a nap. The girls and Tacho head to a diner and order breakfast. Once they begin driving again Nayeli goes to the front to talk to the bus driver. She mistakes northern rabbits for malnourished cows. The bus stops in San Luis at a customs station. The bus driver warns them not to say anything to the officials. The passengers are taken off and pushed through the station in a single file line and asked if they have drugs and if they are Mexicans while their bags are inspected. The head cop harasses Tacho, accusing him of hiding drugs and calling him a prostitute and faggot. Nayeli claims he is her boyfriend to save him from the cop. The cop pulls Tacho into the bathroom with him and gropes Tacho accusing him of wanting to have sex with him. Finally he lets Tacho and the girls go and when they board the bus Tacho cries himself to sleep in Nayeli’s lap. Twenty miles outside of Mexicali, the buses hydraulic system breaks down. Chuy, the bus driver, get out through a window and walks north to find help.
