Thousands of children and adults in San Diego County are expected to take part today in a worldwide attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Record for the largest simultaneous swim lesson.
The annual event was founded in 2010 as a public outreach campaign to lessen the number of children who drown because they don't know how to swim, according to World's Largest Swimming Lesson.
The organization is made up of several agencies, including the American Red Cross, National Parks and Recreation Association, the United States Swim School Association, World Waterpark Association, and others.
Last year, more than 20,000 people in 13 countries and nearly every U.S. state participated. This year's event kicks off at 8 a.m. at the following 14 San Diego County sites:

-- Washington Park Pool, 2245 E. Valley Parkway, Escondido;
-- Noonan Family Swim School, 15555 Jimmy Durante Road, Del Mar;
-- Murray Callan Swim School, 1012 Law St., San Diego;
-- Noonan Family Swim School, 10710 Thornmint Road, San Diego;
-- Aqua Pros Swim School, 4635 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., San Diego;
