Dems, Governor Look to Avoid Sudden Budget Cut to Counties

As budget negotiations continue at the State Capitol, one area of focus is $250 million dollars in property tax money that's currently split among California's 58 counties.

Last week, legislative Democrats proposed a spending plan that would take that money away from counties and put it into the state’s general fund. But Governor Jerry Brown strongly opposes that shift, and Democratic Senator Lois Wolk claimed many lawmakers do too.

"There were a number of us who only voted for the budget because of the assurances that we were given that there would be a different source of $250 million that would be found in the budget," said Wolk.

Negotiations between the legislature and governor are currently trying to find a solution that preserves county general funds.

Many counties have already passed their own budgets assuming that money would be there.
