A burning structure on the outskirts of an East County campground sparked a brush fire that blackened about 30 open acres this afternoon before crews got it under control.
The outbuilding at Thousand Trails Pio Pico RV Resort on Otay Lakes Road in the Jamul area became engulfed in flames for unknown reasons shortly before 2 p.m., according to Cal Fire.
The blaze quickly jumped into surrounding dry vegetation and began moving to the north across hilly open terrain just west of State Route 94, said Mike Mohler, a captain with the state agency.
Dozens of ground personnel attacked the flames, aided by crews aboard four air tankers and three helicopters. The contingent was able to largely halt the spread of the blaze within about 90 minutes. As of 4 p.m., the burn area was about 80 percent contained.
The fire caused no injuries and was never a threat to homes or businesses, Mohler said.
