An Encinitas resident and former Navy SEAL was one of the four Americans killed Tuesday in the attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya, the victim's friends told FOX 5 News.
Glen Doherty, 42, was killed along with Ambassador Chris Stevens and two other Americans when a crowd attacked the consulate compound in Benghazi, Libya.
Doherty, who was born in Boston, served in the SEALS for seven years. He left the Navy about four years ago and settled in Encinitas, where he worked for private security firms and as a trainer at the CrossFIT/SEALFIT Gym.
Friends said Doherty's family was notified of his death by government officials Wednesday afternoon. His sister, Katie Quigley, told the Boston Herald that Doherty was working for a private security firm contracted by the government to provide security at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi. She said he flew to Libya on Sept. 5.
