Former assemblyman Nathan Fletcher announced to supporters Saturday that he has joined the Democratic Party. Fletcher was a Republican when he was elected to the assembly in 2008, representing the 75th District.
In 2012 Fletcher campaigned to be mayor of San Diego and became an independent not long after the Republican Party endorsed Carl DeMaio. Democrat Bob Filner won the mayoral election.
In a message posted to his Facebook page, Fletcher said he doesn't know if he will run for office again and is enjoying working at Qualcomm and UCSD. Fletcher credited conversations with a fellow Marine he served with in Iraq and a politician in Myanmar for helping him make the decision.
