LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Los Angeles County has approved funding for reforms expected to prevent inmate abuse by the Sheriff's Department, including the hiring of additional staff to oversee deputies at the jails.
The Los Angeles Times reports Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to authorize $29.3 million for the first year of a plan that also includes expanding training and installing more video cameras in the jails.
The changes are expected to cost $89.8 million over three years.
The vote comes a year after a citizens' commission handed down an extensive set of recommendations for preventing inmate abuse.
Separately, the board is moving to hire an inspector general for the Sheriff's Department as recommended by the jail violence commission.
The department has faced federal scrutiny and lawsuits over allegations that there has been a pattern of mistreatment of inmates.
