Gunfire Erupts In Ferguson, Mo., Following Anniversary Of Michael Brown Shooting

After a day of peaceful activities marking the one-year anniversary of the shooting death of Michael Brown, gunfire broke out overnight in Ferguson, Mo.

St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said in a press conference early Monday morning that up to six suspects opened fire on police. Belmar said plainclothes officers pursued one of the suspects who then fired upon them.

The plainclothes officers returned fire, striking the suspect, according to Belmar.

Belmar said the suspect is in surgery in "critical...unstable condition."

The four officers have been placed on administrative leave.

Belmar described the individuals involved in the incident as "criminals" and distinguished them from protesters who were marking the anniversary of Brown's death.

Michael Brown was an unarmed, 18-year-old African-American Ferguson resident who was shot and killed by former police officer Darren Wilson, who is white.
