As more people are expected to be able to access the COVID-19 vaccines in the coming months, women who are breastfeeding are having questions about the vaccines.
Based on how these vaccines work, experts believe they are unlikely to pose a specific risk for people who are pregnant, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, the actual risks of the vaccines to pregnant people and fetuses are unknown because these vaccines have not been studied in pregnant women.
The same is true for breastfeeding, however, experts recommend that women who are breastfeeding and eligible for the vaccine receive the shots, and are studying whether a vaccinated woman would actually pass on protective antibodies to her baby.
