Feeding San Diego is going “on tour,” taking its large-scale food distributions around the county. The first stop: Chula Vista.

To date, Feeding San Diego has already helped more than 20,000 San Diegans. On Tuesday, Feeding San Diego set out to provide 1,400 South Bay households with nutritious food. The North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre was set up for COVID-safe, drive thru distribution.

Sam Duke, the volunteer programs manager for Feeding San Diego, knows how much these distribution events help the community.

“It’s very important. A lot of people are facing hunger for the first time due to the pandemic. So Feeding San Diego, being able to provide anything we can do to support the community, it’s what we’re here for.”

They’re calling this the “Together Tour.” Tuesday, 30 volunteers helped to load up 50 pounds of food per car.

“So people can expect to receive about 25 pounds of dry goods, 15 pounds of produce and they’re also going to receive a frozen protein,” Duke said

Residents lined up two hours early to get their share. One of the first in line was Jim, a San Diego resident who didn't want his last name used. He said he's been significantly affected by the pandemic.

The Together Tour’s next distribution will be on Wednesday, April 7 at Pechanga Arena from 10 a.m. to noon.
