San Diego County Fair To Start 22-Day Run Tomorrow

"Taste the Fun" is the theme of the San Diego County Fair, which begins a 22-day run tomorrow at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

In keeping with the theme, the fair will highlight local agriculture producers, the culinary arts and all things related to food, according to organizers.

Of course, there will also be the usual carnival rides, concerts, car shows, animal exhibits and outrageous food creations, including deep-fried Klondike ice cream bars and Pop Tarts.

Highlights of opening day include the Purina Incredible Dog Challenge, a car show, cooking demonstrations, racing pigs and a performance by Sammy Hagar and The Wabos.

The gates open at 11 a.m. at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, preceded by a 10 a.m. opening ceremony at the O'Brien Gate featuring a marching band, the raising of the American flag, singing of the National Anthem and appearances by fair entertainers.

Upcoming headliners on the Grandstand Stage include Paul Rodgers of Bad Company, Los Tigres del Norte, Donna Summer, KC and the Sunshine Band, Kenny Loggins, Switchfoot, Julio Iglesias, Uncle Kracker, Lonestar, Lifehouse, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, a Gospel Festival and an appearance by television cook Guy Fieri.

The San Diego County Fair is the sixth largest event of its kind in the nation, drawing more than 1.2 million visitors annually.

The fair runs through July 5, but is closed most Mondays. Admission is $13 for adults, $7 for seniors 62 and older, $7 for those 6-12 and free for children 5 and under.
