EVENTS
It’s been the summer for street art in SD, and this week the trend continues. Tonight TNT (Thursday Night Thing) returns to MCASD downtown where Viva la Revolución: A Dialogue with the Urban Landscape is on view (which you loyal lusters will know we've covered with enthusiasm). This time around, we’re especially excited that WAVVES will be performing. Also on tap are Mike Maxwell, MIHO Gastrotruck, and the film “Posse” by Dzine.
The wait for Ray at Night is over this Saturday! After a few name changes and permit adjustments, the monthly artwalk is back. There will be booths for local artists and students, space for local restaurants and of course, live music.
Grab your kids (or find your own inner locomotive lover) this Sunday because it's Circus Train Family Day at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum. There will be wooden train making, carnival games and, to the envy of all of us adults, an Astro Jump.
We’ve all been dreaming of the day when we can catch a flight to Tahiti, but this weekend, Tahiti comes to us. Starting Friday, join Friends of Tahiti at Bali Hai for a “heiva” (a Tahitian community gathering) to experience traditional Tahitian food, vendors and dancing.
ART
For some of us here at CL, clowns are creepy. They just are. But perhaps an artistic take on the red-nosed, big-footed merry makers will change our minds. Jest in Time: The Phylogenesis of Clowns opens this Friday at Distinction in typical circus fashion, with music by Calico Jack, food, beer (from Stone Brewery), wine, a baton troupe and fire dancer. Added bonus: if you’re interested in adding clowns to your art collection, everything will be auctioned off with the proceeds going to ArtHatch and Art Scholarships!
Using her time as a war correspondent in Iraq as inspiration, Dani Dodge, journalist turned painter, is presenting “Stories Without Words” at Pimento Fine Art. Meet Dani and see her work at the reception tonight.
This month and next, R.B. Stevenson Gallery is playing host to Charles Arnoldi (made famous by his use of sticks and twigs, with art in the Met and Guggenheim, Bilbao), Vija Celmins, James Hayward, Richard Allen Morris, Kenneth Noland (known for his Color Field paintings) and Guy Williams. Recent and vintage works will be on display.
THEATER
Max, a musically gifted but emotionally estranged high school student, is caught between his mother's impending death and his father's continual absence. Khim Phan is Max’s biology teacher, and the only one of his family to survive the Cambodia killing fields. In EM Lewis' award winning play “Song of Extinction” the two attempt to rescue one another. Presented by ion theatre company, the play will be at the BLKBOX all month.
FILM
This Friday the San Diego Latina Film Festival kicks off their 11th annual ‘en tu Idioma’ four month film series with Regresa, the story of Ernesto and Maria, and Maria’s alter ego, the Basque Princess who believes she's engaged to a 15th century prince. And if alter-egos aren’t really you’re thing, but fake romances are, Musica En Espera is also playing this weekend.
MUSIC
Get your groupie on because it’s the local music event of the season. Featuring over 150 bands at 14 of our favorite San Diego locations, North Park Music Thing is a two-day music festival you won’t want to miss. (And if you have musical aspirations of your own, the local bands will come together during the day to talk about the business side of music!) Check out additional CL coverage here.
