A coalition of elected officials claim the old South Bay Power Plant in Chula Vista is no longer needed. They say it should be torn down.

The San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board will consider extending the plant's water discharge permit at its meeting tomorrow. The discharge permit expired last month.

Assemblywoman Mary Salas and the Environmental Health Coalition plan to ask the board to deny the water discharge permit for the plant.

"As someone who was born and raised in Chula Vista and saw this plant come up, I'm looking forward to the day that it comes down," said Salas.

Salas said the power plant is an eyesore, and the bayfront location is ideal for a development that could benefit the local economy.
