A new building has broken ground in San Diego's East Village. But this complex is a bit different from the pricey condo buildings nearby.
The complex at 15th and Commercial is three buildings in one. Father Joe's Villages will develop it to house a child development center, transitional housing units and studio apartments for low-income single people.
The project will cost close to $60 million. Father Joe Carroll says there was a need for all three programs and he couldn't choose one.
"When we had to make the choice I said to my staff, put all three on top of each other. They looked at me like, you're crazy! I said I'm a New Yorker. You build what you want then you build above it," he said.
Carroll says the complex and other nearby buildings will create a campus environment for the people served by Father Joe's Villages. The new building will open in about a year and a half.
