Janitors gathered outside of Terminal 1 at the San Diego International Airport on Friday to announce their intent to strike in July if their demands for higher pay are not met.
The 183 unionized workers, who clean terminals, food courts and bathrooms say they have hit a roadblock after 6 months of negotiating a new contract with Flagship Airport Services Inc. and Sodexo.
The janitors are members of the SEIU United Service Workers West.
"Even employees who have worked 20 years or 30 years are making just $12.06 an hour," said Genoveva Aguilar, a union representative.
“It’s hard for a janitor to survive in San Diego when everything is going up. Everything is so expensive to live in San Diego,” Aguilar said. “The rent is going up, the food is going up, everything is going up.”
Final contract negotiations are scheduled for July 6th.
