Board of Education Vice President John Lee Evans is thinking of July as a race. The state’s new budget will likely allow San Diego Unified to recall hundreds of laid off teachers, but the exact amount is still being calculated.
This month, teachers who are still employed with the district can start bidding for open positions at schools that have lost teachers.
Evans said determining who will be recalled as quickly as possible is key for school stability.
“I want to publicly make sure that the superintendent and his staff do everything possible during this month to make sure that the teachers that are recalled, are recalled in time so that they can go back to their original positions at their original sites,” he said.
The board expects to see final estimates of the district’s state funding next week.
Evans cited problems with getting information about teacher attrition from the district's human resources department in his motion to expedite recall calculations. The request was supported unanimously with one member absent.
