Brown Vows Battle Over School Funding Plan

Brown Vows Battle Over School Funding Plan
The fight over revamping school funding in California has taken center stage at the Capitol. Governor Jerry Brown says anyone opposing his controversial plan is in for a fight.

The fight over revamping school funding in California has taken center stage at the Capitol.

Under Governor Jerry Brown’s proposed formula, all schools would see past funding cuts restored. But schools with non-English speakers and low income students would get additional money from the state. Schools with a majority of students in those categories would get even more money.

Brown said his plan is about equity and civil rights, and that “increasingly this state is turning into a two-tier society. Those at the top are doing better and better. And those at the middle and at the bottom are doing worse and worse.”

The governor faces opposition from groups who said his plan shortchanges schools in more affluent areas. Brown said his opponents are in for the “battle of their lives.”
