San Diego Teachers Threaten To Strike In 2 School Districts

San Diego Teachers Threaten To Strike In 2 School Districts
With summer coming to a close, two school districts in San Diego County are mired in labor negotiations and teachers are threatening to strike.

Both the Chula Vista Elementary and San Ysidro school districts are stuck in contract negotiations with their unions, which have pre-approved strikes should negotiations fail.

Chula Vista and its union went back into mediation Monday. The mediator declared that the two sides were at an impasse and certified them for fact-finding, the last step of bargaining before a strike can be declared.

Jim Groth, San Diego's California Teachers Association representative said San Diego County has more labor problems than any other place in California.

“Of my colleagues on the CTA board, no one has seen the labor problems we’re having here in San Diego County,” Groth said.

Groth said San Diego districts prefer to keep large reserve funds rather than increase teacher salaries.

Another point of contention for both San Ysidro and Chula Vista is medical coverage.
