Million-Gallon Sewage Spill From Tijuana Closes San Diego Beaches

San Diego County officials are warning people to stay out of the water off Imperial Beach just north of the U.S.-Mexico border after more than a million gallons of sewage spilled off Tijuana.

The county's environmental health department issued the warning Tuesday and posted signs from the border to the north end of Imperial Beach.

A county statement says a pipe broke Monday night and on Tuesday was still spilling sewage into Playas de Tijuana about ¾ of a mile south of the border.

A big decision awaits some voters this July as the race for San Diego County’s Supervisor District 1 seat heats up. Are you ready to vote? Check out the KPBS Voter Hub to learn about the candidates, the key issues the board is facing and how you can make your voice heard.
