A Pacific storm approaching California's coast brings good news for the boldest of wave riders; Organizers of a contest at one of the world's most perilous surfing spots have told competitors to grab their boards and get ready.
Mavericks International organizers set the competition for Friday after forecasters predicted waves with faces exceeding 40 feet near Half Moon Bay, which is located south of San Francisco.
For the first time this year, the competition will be broadcast live on NBC Universal Sports Network, according to the Mavericks website.
The large and potentially dangerous swell arrives in San Diego Friday evening.
