Hundreds of volunteers will be out on Saturday for the annual Clean the Bay Day. The event, according to San Diego Coastkeeper's Megan Baehrens, will focus on South Shores Park, an area historically plagued by trash problems.
Baehrens said last year's undertaking attracted hundreds of volunteers who collected 561 pounds of trash, over a quarter ton, from Mission Bay in three hours.
Among the items removed: a sailboat rudder, a metal pipe, a shopping cart, 454 plastic bags, 563 plastic food wrappers and 1,499 cigarette butts.
Baehrens said this year's clean up will be a little different because paddleboarders, kayakers and other water-loving volunteers will be participating.
"We are inviting people to get out on the water ... because there's a lot of trash that ends up sort of trapped in areas that we can't get to from land," Baehrens said.
Saturday's Clean the Bay Day will take place from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at South Shores Park. Volunteers of all ages are welcome and encouraged to bring their own reusable cleanup supplies, such as buckets, gloves and grabbers.
