Padres Fans Hopeful About New Season At Opening Day Block Party

Padres fans celebrating the 2019 season opening game at a block party in San Diego's East Village, March 28, 2019.

Padres fans showed up for a block party in San Diego's East Village Thursday ahead of the team's opening game against the San Francisco Giants.

New Padres slugger Manny Machado got a standing ovation when he walked up to the plate for the first time. Before a sold-out crowd at Petco Park, San Diego won the first game of the series, 2-0.

The East Village block party included live music, a food truck rally, beer garden, and free games and activities for pets and families. The party starts up again Friday at Noon, on J Street, between 6th and 10th Streets.

Anica Colbert formerly served as an assistant producer for KPBS Evening Edition. Anica also aided in producing the daily podcast, San Diego News Matters and getting KPBS content to the NPR One app for local audio on demand. Previously, she worked at WGCU in Fort Myers, Florida, as a TV master control operator and TV production assistant. She moved to San Diego in 2015 to work for KFMB Channel 8 as a broadcast engineer. She later worked for iHeartmedia’s KOGO 600 AM as a technical director, and part-time producer for the KOGO Evening News Hour. Anica majored in journalism at Florida Gulf Coast University in her hometown of Fort Myers. She also interned with ESPN 3’s TV production of live college basketball for the FGCU’s Eagles.

Kris Arciaga

Kris Arciaga previously worked as a KPBS video journalist, where he worked with a team of news producers and reporters to shoot and edit news packages used in KPBS Evening Edition. Kris began his professional career volunteering at KOCT in Oceanside where he received training in all areas of production and news gathering. As a news photographer at KUSI and Fox 6 San Diego, he learned techniques to help hone his craft of visual storytelling. Kris graduated with a BA in visual arts from Cal State San Marcos with a focus on film and television. Outside of news gathering, he enjoys surfing, live music and discovering new restaurants.
