The California Legislature has approved a bill that would require high school coaches to get special training on concussions.
The Centers for Disease Control says nearly one out of ten high school sports injuries involves a concussion or other brain trauma.
The California bill would require high school coaches to get training every two years on how to recognize the signs of a concussion.
Carmel Valley resident Beth Mallon runs a non-profit that educates young athletes about concussions. She said high school football isn't the only sport to worry about.
"If you look at the numbers in girls cheerleading, it's huge," Mallon explained. "We're really starting to look at other sports that may not have been keeping track of their concussion numbers."
Football has the highest rate of concussions in high school sports, followed by girls soccer.
