San Diego County officials are marking the one year anniversary of their free prescription drug discount program.
Officials say it's saved residents a lot of money, and provided some extra cash to the county.
The Coast2Coast Rx discount card is operated by a private company. The county receives $1.35 each time the card is used.
The free card offers savings of up to 75 percent on both brand name and generic prescription drugs.
The cards are available at pharmacies throughout the county, and anyone can use them.
Officials report in the program's first year, San Diegans have saved nearly $5 million on their prescriptions.
County Supervisor Ron Roberts said almost 22,000 people have taken advantage of the discount card.
"The number, while it's significant, it has the potential to grow exponentially," Roberts explained. "And I would hope that we'd see a significant increase this year."
So far, the county has received a dividend of around $115,000. Roberts said the money is going in part to health programs for the poor.
