The military is embedding social scientists with troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. The idea is for non-military people to apply their academic expertise in studying the local culture to help the military better understand the people around them.
The Army's Human Terrain Teams seem to have helped reduce violence in Afghanistan, but the program remains controversial and inconsistent.
