Hundreds of San Diegans gathered at Balboa Park Monday for the 32nd annual All Peoples Celebration to honor the life and legacy of the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

This year’s theme is a call to action —“Be Heard. Be Counted. Belong.” It’s a message that was echoed by the event's keynote speaker Valarie Kaur. Kaur is a civil rights activist, lawyer, filmmaker and author. She grew up in California's Central Valley and is the founder of the Revolutionary Love Project, a movement that focuses on the idea that love could be a force for social change.

Kaur joined Midday Edition on Monday to discuss the connections between current and past social justice movements.
