Marine Commandant Defers on "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"

Marine Commandant Gen. James Amos has changed his tune - but it's not like he has much choice at this point. Among all military leaders, Amos has been one of the most outspoken opponents of the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," which prohibited gays from serving openly in the military.

At the Pentagon last Tuesday, one reporter brought up the topic of repeal of DADT and Amos responded: 'I don't want to lose any Marines to the distraction. I don't want to have any Marines that I'm visiting at Bethesda [National Naval Medical Center, in Maryland] with no legs be the result of any type of distraction.'

But now that the Senate has passed legislation for repeal and President Obama is expected to sign it into law on Wednesday, the top Marine vows to to faithfully carry it out within the Marine Corps. A lot of publications have been publishing excerpts of the conciliatory statement made by the Marine boss last night, but The Stars and Stripes blog posted his full statement, in which he said:
