Every Dog Has Its Day - And For Military Dogs, It's Saturday

Dogs are as much a part of the military as dog tags. For each military dog on duty, 150 soldier's lives are saved, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. So it seems only fitting that this Saturday, the Rancho Coastal Humane Society in Encinitas will unveil the only private memorial west of the Mississippi honoring military dogs. Click here for details.

The memorial will feature the likeness of Chyba, a 12-year-old German Shepherd who served in Iraq in 2004. After retiring from the service, Chyba was adopted by T. Boone Pickens and his wife Madeline. The idea for the memorial came from the brains of Mrs. Pickens and Rancho Coastal President James Silveira.

If you're interested in adopting a retired military dog, the U-T reports:

Fun trivia: the most decorated military dog in history was a pit bull terrier mix named Stubby. Sgt. Stubby served in World War I with the 102nd Infantry.
