In a bizarre turn of events, the woman accused of crashing into a Marine war hero while he was on his motorcycle is also the wife of a Marine. KFMB-TV cameras were in the courtroom yesterday when prosecutors announced 21-year-old Jessica Bloom had a blood alcohol level of .37 (that's not a misprint) when she hit Gunnery Sergeant Dave Smith from behind with her vehicle, then fled the scene to her apartment complex.
According to KFMB-TV, Smith is on life support at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido. Camp Pendleton Patch reports Smith has been in the Marines for 17 years, and was stationed at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego. He is a recipient of the the Bronze Star.
Bloom is behind bars, held on $100,000 bail. Deputy District Attorney Matthew Williams says she could get up to nine years in prison if a jury convicts her of the charges she faces - DUI causing injury and hit-and-run causing injury.
