6 of 7 Marines Killed in Helicopter Collision Were Camp Pendleton Based

Two military helicopters collided near Yuma, Arizona Wednesday night during a training mission, killing the seven Marines on board.

The Los Angeles Times reports that six of the seven Marines on board were based at Camp Pendleton. The seventh was based at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma.

Defense officials told NBC News the Marines were from the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, which is based at MCAS Miramar. Miramar spokeswoman Lt. Maureen Dooley told the Associated Press the Marines killed in the crash were assigned to Camp Pendleton.

MCCS Camp Pendleton's Facebook page acknowledged the loss this morning:

CNN reports the two helicopters involved were a AH-1W "Cobra" and a UH-1Y "Huey." The two aircraft apparently collided in midair during training exercises near Yuma.

The Department of Defense has not yet released the the names of the seven Marines killed, as their families have not all been notified. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
