Roughly a dozen F/A-18 Hornet jets from MCAS Miramar's Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 314 have been sent to an undisclosed country in the Middle East due to U.S. tensions with Iran, according to the U-T San Diego.
The paper reports the U.S. Central Command "quietly" sent the squadron overseas in September. Members of the the U.S. Central Command contacted by the U-T declined to comment on which Middle Eastern country the squadron was sent to, and what the mission was, citing security concerns.
In addition, U.S. Central Command spokesman, Army Lt. Col. T.G. Taylor, told the U-T:
“Like other U.S. areas of responsibility, releasing information of U.S. basing and missions is based on formal agreements with host nations. In most cases, it is inappropriate to discuss specific operational details.”
The most specific statement from the military cited in the U-T was from Brig. Gen. Steven Busby, the commanding general of the Miramar based 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, who told the paper the Miramar squadron was sent to the Middle East...
[F]or “theater security cooperation,” to train and otherwise support regional allies.
