Construction Of New Naval Hospital On Track
The new Naval Hospital being built on Camp Pendleton is 70 percent complete.

The new Naval Hospital is going up just east of Interstate 5 as you drive into San Diego from the north. It’s almost a $500 million project, the largest project on base funded by federal stimulus money.

Ground breaking was just under two years ago and the hospital is scheduled to open in 2014. It’s reportedly ahead of schedule and has spent less than 1 percent of costs on unforeseen project changes.

Nationwide, an estimated 50,000 servicemen and women have been injured in recent conflicts. Beyond the physical injuries, 400,000 more are living with PTSD and combat-related stress. Another 320,000 may have experienced a traumatic brain injury while deployed.

Although the number of beds in the new hospital will be fewer than in the old hospital on base, the new hospital will offer more outpatients services, dental treatment and emergency care.

The construction is keeping almost 1,000 people employed.
