A new study on hunger in America finds roughly 25 percent of military households need assistance from food banks to feed their families.
The Hunger in America 2014 study was conducted by Feeding America, the largest hunger relief charity in the United States.
This is the first year researchers surveyed military families. They discovered Feeding America's network of 200 food banks provides assistance to 620,000 families with at least one member in the U.S. military.
Wichita Falls Area Food Bank director Mark McKethan told Texas television station KFDX-TV:
"We are seeing a greater and greater need for the military among our pantries: increased uses of food stamps and SNAP."
Jewish Family Service of San Diego director Shana Hazan spoke with NBC News about the struggles of military families who seek help through her charity:
“Lowest income military families are living paycheck to paycheck, and even those paychecks aren't enough to make ends meet.”
Lindsey Yetter, a Navy wife for 17 years, says the cost of living in San Diego is above and beyond what her family can afford:
“We’re doing everything we can possibly think to be doing and we're barely making it.”
