The Department of Defense announced Tuesday it has reclassified the death of Marine Corps Cpl. Jordan L. Spears, 21, as in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.
The Pentagon initially classified Spears's death on Oct. 1 as "a non-global war on terrorism casualty."
Spears was assigned to Marine Tiltrotor Squadron 163, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, I Marine Expeditionary Force at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.
He was lost at sea Oct. 1 when he bailed out of a MV-22B Osprey after the aircraft appeared to lose power after taking off from the USS Makin Island in the North Arabian Sea.
As Home Post previously reported, numerous media outlets took the liberty of calling Spears the first casualty of the U.S. military's campaign against ISIS (now officially called Operation Inherent Resolve) soon after U.S. forces in the North Persian Gulf suspended search effotrs for Spears on Oct. 2.
