Sen. Tim Johnson (D-SD) remains in critical condition in a Washington, D.C., hospital after overnight surgery on his brain. Around mid-morning, the Capitol's top physician, Dr. John Eisold, said Johnson had been found to have bleeding on his brain caused by a congenital condition known as "arteriovenous malformation."
The 59-year-old second-term senator was hospitalized yesterday after feeling ill at the Capitol.
Washington, D.C., was filled with dense fog this morning. It seemed an apt metaphor for the uncertainty hanging over Capitol Hill, with Sen. Johnson's sudden and alarming health crisis.
Johnson's party is set to take over control of the Senate, after winning a 51-49 majority in last month's election. Should his condition worsen, there is a possibility that Republicans could retain control.
But Dr. Eisold says Johnson's operation to drain and stanch the bleeding was successful. And later, he said that the senator was having an uncomplicated recovery; that he is responding to voice and touch; and that he would need no further surgery.
