In an effort to minimize flight delays, air-traffic controllers will soon offer pilots a choice of accepting a departure delay or a detour around small areas of bad weather.
The Federal Aviation Administration's plan relies on software that will identify bad weather, such as thunderstorms, and search the flight plans of thousands of planes to see which ones are headed for the spots.
