Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, a 2008 "dream candidate" for many conservatives who are disenchanted with the Republican presidential field, will announce the creation of a preliminary fundraising effort that will test the waters to see if there is room for another GOP candidate Monday.
Ten Republicans are already running, but polls have consistently shown that Thompson would be a major contender if he were to enter the race.
Thompson, an actor who has appeared on Law and Order and in other TV and movie projects, is scheduled to make a speech before state Republicans in Virginia this weekend. He could make an appearance on late-night television in the coming weeks.
