Government Reform Hearings Begin

A state legislative committee began a series of hearings today on the contentious, issue of government reform.

It’s pretty wonky, complicated stuff. But just about everyone agrees it’s important. Making the state’s budget and legislative processes better and improving oversight of government agencies. Lawmakers heard from a variety of experts, including State Treasurer Bill Lockyer, who used to be the state Senate Leader: He said there are too many bad bills coming out the Assembly and it’s time for some limits:

“Just stop it. I mean, they’re junk and they’re consuming all your staff time with junk. So, it’s not a rule, it’s cultural," said Lockyer. " Nancy Reagan’s right. Just say No!”

Lawmakers plan to hold five hearings around the state. Outside groups have called for a constitutional convention that could address some of the issues lawmakers are discussing. A recent Field Poll showed approval ratings for both Governor Schwarzenegger and the legislature have reached a record low.

A big decision awaits some voters this July as the race for San Diego County’s Supervisor District 1 seat heats up. Are you ready to vote? Check out the KPBS Voter Hub to learn about the candidates, the key issues the board is facing and how you can make your voice heard.
