San Diego Offers Assistance For Home Upgrades

Even mild San Diego has its hot days now and then. Now the city is partnering with San Diego Gas and Electric and California Center for Sustainable Energy to offer low-income residents free energy upgrades to their homes.

Those who qualify can receive upgrades to attic insulation and ventilation systems among other things. The improvements are aimed at lowering electricity bills.

Council President Tony Young said the program is designed to help people overcome a hurdle in upgrading their houses.

"Probably the most significant reasons people don’t make their homes and businesses more energy efficient is the high upfront cost that it takes to do this," he said.

Eligibility for the program is based on family size and income. The city has about $2 million available for the program.
