Federal transportation investigators will try to determine what caused a U.S. Coast Guard ship to crash into a private boat in San Diego Bay over the weekend. One youngster was killed and five others were seriously injured.
The accident took place at night during the city's annual holiday boat parade. Coast Guard officials say a crew was responding to an incident when its ship collided into a smaller boat carrying 13 passengers.
The collision killed an eight-year-old boy. Two kids and three adults are in critical but stable condition.
The National Transportation Safety Board is conducting an investigation.
The Coast Guard's Josh Nelson says this accident sets a tragic precedent.
"We don't have any record of something like this happening with the Coast Guard in San Diego," Nelson said. "This whole tragedy is something that the Coast Guard is taking very seriously. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone that is involved because it is a very grave tragedy."
Officials say seven of the 13 people on the boat were small children. The driver of the boat told the Associated Press the Coast Guard ship was traveling at high speeds.
