Bureau Of Land Management Investigating Off-Road Race Events
The federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is conducting an official review of a weekend accident at an off-road race in the California desert.
Three men from Escondido and one man from Spring Valley were among the eight spectators killed when a pickup truck driven by a San Marcos man went out of control and into the crowd.
The BLM is also cooperating with other law enforcement agencies to investigate the off-road vehicle, or OHV, event.
David Briery is with the agency's California Desert District.
He said the BLM is also reviewing all off-road events in the district for safety provisions.
"We expect the review and investigations to be done expediously but we have no specific completion date," Briery said.
Race promoter Mojave Desert Racing had a BLM permit for the event, which has raised questions about oversight and safety at the races on federal land.
